Your comment very much reflects my thoughts about this article. It should also be remembered that Bill Maher, for all his opinion-based commentary, is a comedian. It shouldn’t be surprising to the writer that he makes exaggerated statements like the one about starvation in this country. Most people have the common sense to notice the exaggeration of those jokes. There are, of course, circumstances in which things shouldn’t be joked about, but if we totally forbid it then our ability to appreciate the positive side of life is diminished.
You’re right in saying that Maher is simply stating that we should not demonize the US. Indeed, there are many here who do just that on a regular basis. There was an article that had been published on Yahoo News which named the US as the 10th most dangerous nation in the world for women. That article had been published in the midst of the MeToo movement. If one has basic knowledge of how women are treated around the world — in the Middle East, for example — it’s extremely hard to believe that the US would rank 10th out of 193 countries — or 195 depending on how you count them — in terms of danger towards women.
