While I was willing to give it some benefit of the doubt after George Floyd’s death, I’ve found that even the movement is too problematic for me to support. Its supporters frequently insist, among other things, that white supremacy is widespread among white Americans, and that equity based on race - rather than individual circumstances - is a good solution to our country’s disparities. This may be part of the reason why, among all Americans, opposition to the BLM movement is the highest it’s been since at least 2017 (https://civiqs.com/results/black_lives_matter?uncertainty=true&annotations=true&zoomIn=true).
Anyway, very good article, Pamela. I appreciate your even-handed, insightful take on this subject.
