True, there is a great deal of nuance in these anthropological categorizations (talk about loaded terms!). I can see an argument for given people an open-ended choice regarding race, i.e. having a blank space they can fill if they want to. On the applications I mentioned, there was the choice of picking two or more racial groups. But I can also see how, given these complexities, people might just prefer to avoid the question altogether.
