There’s no question that the effects of segregation continue to linger in this country — there’s also little question, however, that initiatives meant to help Americans in poverty have perpetuated those effects for blacks. There does also seem to be some interpersonal racism at play, if the studies are not far off, that makes it more challenging for blacks to obtain things like housing and jobs. Some would call that systemic racism, but it could really only be called that if there were an established practice - like segregation - of barring/limiting blacks from the goals they seek to achieve. I do believe that there are ways that we can and should address these incidents of interpersonal racism. That can be a subject for a future article.
