I watched a number of Proud Family episodes growing up. And yeah I didn’t find it to be laced with political messaging, although apparently there were a few episodes that addressed homophobia, Islamophobia and the civil rights movement. In these socially contentious times, I suppose one can expect that a reboot was going to include themes like police brutality and systemic racism.
Of course, police brutality is barely a racial thing and while I believe systemic racism exists, I don’t believe it exists in the way that those who call themselves anti-racists usually say it does. There are indeed some controversial parts of Lincoln’s history, but I’m honestly surprised they go that far in this reboot. The good side of Lincoln almost certainly outweighs his bad side. I happen to think that there’s plenty to like about Malcolm X even though he’s been thought of as MLK’s “evil twin.”
It’s unfortunate the path that so many entities in our entertainment, education and businesses realms have taken with regard to social justice. Most of us want a better life for everyone, but the means do not always justify the ends.
