Good article, Jeff. It is rather unfortunate to see people drift away from their spirituality. What I personally find even more unfortunate is the embrace of “woke” culture you talk about. I agree, however, that people are beginning to see past the deeply misguided beliefs of that culture. Support for Black Lives Matter, which peaked after George Floyd’s murder, is the lowest it’s been since that time. Of course, I support the central principle of the movement, but in practice the movement has a number of profound flaws. I recently wrote about one of them in my latest article.
With regard to church attendance, I think part of it is that people are skeptical and tired of the traditional, rigid norms often found in religion. I myself stopped attending the Catholic church and became part of the local community church in my town basically for that reason. Many others in my church also moved away from the Catholic church. I like to think that rather than just an abandonment of spirituality, we’re seeing a reshaping of it. For some people that means no longer attending a church but keeping their spirituality - to varying degrees - and for others it simply means moving to a place more representative of their beliefs.
