Good article, Adam. Like I said in another comment, I think some of the benefit you describe political correctness as providing to our social discourse might be better attributed to common decency. There are, of course, certain situations in which jokes are not appropriate — e.g. a group of white high school girls in Arizona who lined up for a senior photo wearing golden letters that spelled “ni**er.” Context is essential to the acceptability of any such jokes. Bill Maher has a lot of good things to say as well about political correctness, and has been relentless in speaking out against the heavy-handed social vigilance — what some call “wokeness” — we’re seeing today.
